Say What Now of the Day: IMDb user (and possible troll?) brian__007 posted a comment yesterday in the message boards for Peter Jackson’s upcoming prequel The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey that accused Lord of the Rings of ripping off Harry Potter. Brian’s rant quickly racked up more than 100 comments and was deleted, but not before the Internets captured a screencap.

Here’s the manifesto in full:

Overall, I like Lord of the Rings. However, I do feel that Tolkien kind of rips off Harry Potter in many ways. There are several parallels, such as elves, dwarfs, wizards, goblins, trolls, magic (especially invisibility), etc. Sauron is referred to as “Dark Lord” just like Voldemort is. There is also the elder white-haired bearded wizard who serves as a mentor, Gandalf, who is reminiscent of Dumbledore. Some of the character names are similar, such as Wormtongue as opposed to Wormtail, too. There is even a gigantic spider (Shelob) at the end of “The Two Towers” that reminds one of Aragog from Chamber of Secrets. I even noticed that the plots of both series begin with the protagonists’ birthday. Now I see that Tolkien, this unoriginal bastard, is coming out with The Hobbit in December. This would be fine, but why didn’t he just write this book first to begin with? I still like Lord of the Rings, though–don’t get me wrong–but I wonder if Tolkien has ever said in interviews whether he borrowed elements from Harry Potter. I’ll be watching the extended DVDs later this week and I think he’s featured on the commentary track, so I look forward to that.

[uproxx]

This is awesome. But honestly, I’ve always been curious why more people don’t accuse Harry Potter of being a Lord of the Rings rip. Don’t get me wrong, I like Harry Potter just fine and the later books get better and do diverge, but come on…

Massive fail by the original commentator! So good

RealClearPolitics - The Real Lesson from J.P. Be yourself and work as hard as you can to bring wonderful things into the world. Figure out how you want to contribute and do that, in your own way, on your own terms, as hard as you can, as much as you can, as long as you can.
His most lasting message, I hope, won’t be about technology or management or media or communications or even design. The work he did in those areas certainly matters and will continue to — impossible to ignore it.
Still, I think it’s not the main thing, the essential thing.
I hope the message that people really take, really internalize is that being yourself, as hard as you can, is the way to have important and lasting impact on our world. That might be in the context of technology. It might be in the context of technology, or the arts, or sports, or government, or social justice — or even in the context of your family and close friends.
It almost doesn’t matter. The thing that matters most is to figure out what’s important to you, what’s core to you, and do that. Be that. And do it as well as you possibly can, every single day.”

- John’s Tumblr: Steve Jobs

classier-than-a-fangirl:

Actually, it’s more than that. This song captures how I picture a marriage; that during those difficult times, those times when it’s only you and you have a huge burden to bear, you really are not alone, that someone will be there by your side, sharing their faith and support.

I just think that would be a good marriage to be a part of. It means that much more when you meet that person who inspires that — that when you are with them, you know deep in your bones that this person, this wonderful person, is going to share their hopes and fears and faith and support with you — and the reverse is true, that this is the person you are going to support and share your faith and your hopes and know that “when you meet what we’re afraid of/we find out what we are made of”

This is what I think our marriage will be.

My Playlist - April 17, 2011

It’s been a while since I posted one of these. But not because I suddenly ran out of songs to add to the playlist! I could say I was extremely busy (I was) but that’s not a good reason why.

The reason there hasn’t been a playlist post is that I was busy picking music for some other stuff that’s as important, if not more so. I have been listening and re-listening to music and made a choice.

It turned out to be a good choice. It worked really well.

So to make it up for my tardiness in posting, I wanted to post a slightly longer post. Here goes:

1. Ben Harper - “Everything“
This song is on Ben’s “Diamonds on the Inside” which isn’t really my favorite Ben Harper. But this particular song is very optimistic, and is just a fun love song — to me it isn’t a “typical” Ben Harper, but it’s a song that just infects you with that trademark Ben Harper way he sings… just really sounds like he and the band had fun making this song and it shines through..

2. Crosby Loggins - “Seriously”
This is one of those songs seems sad but to me, is very insightful and poetic. This song captures those moments in a relationship, where you take a huge step of commitment, and the guy is having those self-doubts. Those where he knows he’s with someone who is great, but is he good enough to stand, to be with her? We have all been there….

3. Decemberists - “Rise to Me”
Again, one of those that sound sad, but you know, to me it’s a big defiant song. This is a song about Fatherhood. The lead singer has a son who has autism. To me, it adds that level of being a father and having to deal with your son and relating not only to your son, but to LIFE. That no matter what, you are my son, we will meet the various challenges that will RISE TO ME and I will BLOW THEM DOWN. That’s a great way to approach Fatherhood.

4. Ryan Adams - “When the Stars Go Blue”
First of all, Ryan’s voice is achingly sweet in this song. Secondly, it conveys a lot of emotion. Lastly, the images in here are so vivid “dancing in your wooden shoes/in your wedding gown” and “Laughing with your broken eyes/Laughing with your lover’s tongue/In a lullaby” — wow. A little of that unrequited love we have had and makes it so hard to get over; or maybe it’s a story of a love that’s not meant to be, that it’s being acknowledged but no matter what he will be there…

5. Kenny Chesney (ft. Grace Potter) - ”You and Tequila”
This is a very seductive song. It’s an interesting metaphor — tequila as love. If you sit back and reflect, that kind of love is really like a poison. An all-consuming love is one that is all you want — you crave that person, you can’t stop thinking about them — we call this the honeymoon phase. It’s rough. But it’s still a heck of a lot of fun and we all love that feeling. Just don’t overdo it. The tequila part. :)
